Neil’s driving school

Practical test

The test will last about 40 minutes and will start with an eyesight test. You will need to read either an old style number plate from 20.5 metres or a new style number plate from 20 metres. If you fail this part, the test will not continue.

When you arrive at the car, the examiner will ask you 2 of a possible 19 vehicle safety questions (show me/tell me questions).

The cost of a practical car test, as of 30th March 2009 is £62.00 for a weekday test or £75.00 for a weekend or weekday evening test (after 4.30pm).

Below is a video of how the independent drive will work

As well as looking at your general driving, the examiner will ask you several times to find a safe place to pull over and then move off. You will also do an angled start and a hill start.

Included in the test is a 10 minute independent drive before which you will be asked to either follow a series of directions, follow traffic signs or a combination of both.

The examiner may also show you a diagram of where they would like you to drive.

It doesn't matter if you go the wrong way as long as no driver or serious errors are made. In which case you will be marked accordingly. If you do make a wrong turn, the examiner will guide you back on course.

At the end of your test the examiner will tell you whether you’ve passed or failed and will offer a de-brief.

By the time you take your practical test, your driving should be at a very high standard.

During the test you can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass. However, if you make the same driver fault more than 3 times you may fail. If you commit 1 serious or dangerous fault you will also fail.

On the day of your practical test you will need to bring both parts of your licence, your theory test pass certificate and your appointment letter.

At the start of your test the examiner will ask you whether you would like your instructor to accompany you. Whether they do or not is entirely your choice. Your instructor cannot help you in any way but by being present they can identify future development needs for a subsequent test or additional skills to build on after passing the test.
