Theory candidates with special requirements

For those whose first language is not English you can request a voiceover in 1 of 21 languages. The questions will be read out to you through headphones. The languages are: Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Dari, English, Farsi, Gujarati, Hindi, Kashmiri, Kurdish, Mirpuri, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Pushto, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Urdu and Welsh.

If the language you require isn’t available, you can choose to have a translator assisted theory test.

If you have dyslexia or any other reading difficulties you can ask for an English or Welsh voiceover. You can also request to have more time to complete the multiple choice part.

If you are deaf or have hearing difficulties you can request to have the test taken in British sign language.

Multiple choice

This section is made up of 50 multiple choice questions that will need to be answered within 57 minutes.

You are given the option of a 15 minute practice session before the real test begins.

Throughout the test you can ‘flag’ any questions that you’re not sure about and come back to them when you’ve reached question 50. Some questions may require more than one correct answer. Make sure you use all the time that is available to you to go over all the questions in case you’ve made any obvious mistakes.

To pass this section you must score at least 43 out of 50.

You must pass both sections to pass your theory test. After your test you will be given your result by the test centre staff. Your theory certificate is valid for 2 years within which you must pass your practical test.

The cost of a theory test, as of 30th March 2009 is £31.00

Hazard perception

Before the hazard perception test begins you will be shown a short tutorial video clip explaining how the test works.

The hazard perception test is made up of 14 video clips that feature everyday road scenes. In every clip there will be at least 1 developing hazard but 1 clip will have 2 developing hazards. You respond to the hazard by clicking your mouse button. In real life terms, a mouse click is a mirror check because if the hazard develops you may need to change speed or direction and therefore you need to know what is behind you.

The maximum you can score for each hazard is 5 points, falling to 4,3,2 then 1 point the closer you get.

You cannot review your answers because, as on the road, you only have one chance to respond to a developing hazard.

To pass this section you must score as least 44 out of 75.
